Q

Name the formation of a stalactite

A

A stalactite is a calcite structure that hangs from a cave ceiling.a stalactite is formed when rainwater (H20) mixes with carbonic acid dioxide (C02) to form carbonic acid (H2C03). The carbonic acid reacts with the calcium carbonate in the limestone which contains up to 95% of calcium carbonate. The carbonic acid dissolves the calcium carbonate forming calcium bicarbonate which is soluble in water. The waste then seeps through the limestone into a cave. The water evaporates on the cave ceiling, depositing calcite. Eg. The Doolin Cave Co. Clare
