Test Flashcards
Cell
A mass of cytoplasm that is externally bound by a cell membrane.
Animalcule
A organism that is invisible or nearly invisible to the naked eye.
Prokaryote
Any cell that lacks a distinct nucleus and other organelles due to the absence of internal membranes
Eukaryote:
Any cell or organism that possesses a clearly defined nucleus.
Cell Wall
A structural layer that surrounds some cell types, found immediately outside the cell membrane.
Chromatin
A highly organized condensed structure made up of DNA and Proteins that forms the chromosomes in the nucleus of the cell
Chromosomes
A threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes.
Nucleolus
An area inside the nucleus of a cell that is made up of RNA and proteins and is where ribosomes are made.
Nuclear Envelope
A double layer that encloses the cell’s nucleus, where the chromosomes reside.
Porous
Holes allowing the passage of gases and/or liquids by diffusion rather then bulk flow.
Cytoskeleton
A structure that helps cells maintain their shape and internal organization
Microtubules
Hollow tube-like structure found in the cytoplasm
Microfilaments
Part of the cytoskeleton made from actin proteins.
Intermediate filaments
A type of cytoskeletal component found in eukaryotic cells
Cilia
Hair-like structures present on the surface of all mammalian cells.
