Test 1 SG Flashcards
What is the greatest determinant of molecular interactions?
Water!
Polar, Non-Polar, and Ionic are what in water inetearctions?
Polar Hydrophilic
Non-polar Hydrophobic
Ionic Hydrophilic
How does water dissolve substances?
Through opposite charge interactions (dipole-dipole, ion-dipole)
What is the hierarchy of intermolecular forces?
Dispersion (nonpolar) -> Dipole-dipole -> Ion-dipole -> H-bonding
How do you determine bonds in polarity?
Polar = N-H, H-F, or O-H present = H-bond
Not present = dipole-dipole
Non-polar=dispersion forces
What is the phase hierarchy affecting about intermolecular forces?
Solid>Liquid>Gas
Does size matter in I.M. forces?
Larger molecules have a higher boiling point.
What is an amphipathic molecule?
Contains both hydrophobic and hydrophilic parts
What is an Acid? A base?
H+ donor and H+ receiver
What is the Hendersen Hasselback equation
pH = PkA + log (A-/HA)
When concentrations are equal, what does this indicate?
PH=PKA
If Pka > PH, what does this mean?
Weak acid or A- prevails
IF pka < ph, what does this indicate?
Conjugate base of HA prevails
