Chapter 2 Flashcards
Is the cell an aqueous environment?
Yes it is
What is the greatest determinate of molecular interactions?
Water
What is a non-polar interaction?
Hydrophobic interactions (away from water or aqueous environment)
What is a polar interaction?
Hydrophilic interactions (dipole-dipole or hydrogen bonding), electrostatic.
What is a ionic interaction?
Hydrophilic interactions (ion dipole), electrostatics
Do ionic interactions occur in aqueous environments?
No!
What’s the difference between inter and intra molecular forces.
Intermolecular forces are between molecules, while intramolecular forces are within molecules.
What is the hierarchy of intermolecular forces?
Dispersion, Dipole-Dipole, ion-dipole, and hydrogen bonding.
What is the hierarchy of intramolecular forces?
Covalent, ion-ion.
Due to water solvation, what are the strongest bonds in an aqueous cell?
Covalent bonds
Strength in IM force is due to what?
Phase, with solid>liquid>gas
As IM forces strength increases….
The amount of energy required to break the IM increases.
How do we determine polarity?
Polar with a N-H, O-H, or H-F bond is a hydrogen bond, without is a dipole-dipole.
Nonpolar is just dispersion.
Why do biomolecules have a large amount of opportunities for hydrogen bonding?
The presence of N-H and O-H bonds.
