Artificial means
usually refer to mechanical means such as respirators; it does not include pain medication.
Persistent vegetative state
patient shows no evidence of awareness of self or environment and an inability to interact with others.
wrongful living
when a patient through what is proper and competent medical care is kept alive; interference with a person’s legal right to die.
advance directives
A persons actualized expressions determining end of life issues.
living will
A person’s declaration of the type or manner of medical care in the event they suffer from a terminal condition or persistent vegetative state. Can be for prolonging life or not prolonging life.
terminal condition
one caused by injury, disease or illness from which there is no reasonable likelihood of recovery.
life prolonging procedure
any treatment or procedure that uses artificial or mechanical means to restore, sustain or replace a bodily function that without which one would cease living.

A person named by the declarant to make all medical decisions in the event the declarant is unable to do so.

Another form of advance directive where a person is authorized to act on the declarant’s behalf on issues regarding medical care
attorney-in-fact
Person named to act on behalf of the declarant on the power of attorney, be it a medical power of attorney or otherwise.

Federal Law that require health care facilities to give patients a written summary of their rights regarding health care.
