Test 1 - Molecules and compounds Flashcards
What is an element, a molecule, and a compound?
-Element: Elements are all the different types of atoms we know exist on Earth, there are 118 knon elements on earth.
-Molecule: A molecule is made out of two or more atoms which has combined
-Compound: A compound is a mix of two or more different atoms.
What are the differences between molecules and compounds?
-All compounds are molecules but not all molecules are compounds . A compound is made out of 2 or more different atoms combined, but a molecule is just made out of 2 or more atoms, no matter if they are different or not.
How and why do chemical bonds form?
-when atoms share or transfer valence electrons, they create chemical bonds to become molecules.
What is a Valence Shell?
-The valence shell is the outermost layer on an atom, it consists of up to 8 electrons.
What is a chemical formula and what information does it tell us?
-A chemical formula is like a recipe, that tells you which atoms and how many of each atom. Like H2O, that’s 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen.
