What is the Health Belief Model:
Perception of susceptibility to illness
perception of seriousness of illness
likelihood that patient will take preventive action
What is the health promotion model?
Positive dynamic state
directed at increasing level of well-being
Focuses on: Individual characteristics/ experiences, Behavior-specific knowledge and affect, Behavioral outcomes
What is the Holistic Health Model?
more focused on holistic needs
promote the patient’s optimal level of health
nurses consider patients to be the ultimate experts in regards to their own health
What is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs?
Basic human needs are elements necessary for survival and health
extent to which basic needs are met determines level of health
What is the definition of internal needs?
disrupt normal routine
more likely to seek care
What is the definition of external needs?
A patient with visible symptoms is more likely to seek care than someone with no visible symptoms.
What are internal variables?
developmental stage- fear, anxiety
intellectual background- knowledge, cognitive skills
perception of functioning- fatigue, pain
What are external variables?
Family practices- How family uses health care services
socioeconomic factors- stability, lifestyle habits
cultural background- influences- beliefs, customs, beliefs about causes of illness
What is health promotion?
Helps individuals maintain or enhance their present health.
What is health education?
Helps people develop a greater understanding of their health and how to better manage their health risks.
What are socioeconomic factors that influence health and health beliefs?
stability of key relationship
lifestyle habits
occupational environment
social networks/desire for approval & support
economic variables influence when the patient accesses care and whether he complies with care
may try to decrease costs by taking meds every other day, or water down infant formula

The essence of excellent nursing practice
What does caring look like in nursing practice?
Providing presence touch listening knowing the patient spiritual caring relieving pain and suffering family-centered care
What does providing presence mean?
conveying closeness & sense of caring
being there
eye contact, body language, voice tone, listening and positive attitude contribute to development of trust
important during stressful events
What does touch mean?
provides comfort
creates connection
non-contact touch: eye contact
contact touch: touching shoulder
