George A. Custer

- was a Cernal in the army
- had experience in the civil war
- very good opinion of himself
- His army of 264 men is ready to attack the indians
- Custer was given clear orders to go around the back and block the indians escape route into the hills
- He has no order to attack but cluster attacks
- This brings on the battle of little big horn where he is then killed.

- Custer attacks without an order; Custer and all of his men get killed
- Known as Custers Last stand in 1874
- Huge boost for the Indians but long term they can’t hold against the army and very quickly the indians have defeated and moved into another reservation without gold.

The specific railroad act of 1862

- created a system of land grants to fund the track
- it says in 5 square mile tracks in a checkerboard pattern on each side of the track can be sold to pay for the track
- the government owns the rest
- It is a great deal for those in the railroad business
- The railroad is expected to make people crazy rich
- Not a very good system but there was no other way
- by 1869 the transcontinental railroad is complete
- this transforms the west
