Test 1 Histology pictures Flashcards
A has necrosis: proteins are aggregating and there are no nuclei in the cells
B is normal: refer to nuclei in cells
what is this a picture of?
a liver; magenta stains glycogen and the liver is normally full of glycogen
Does the left or right picture indicate a damaged kidney?
The left; the thin magenta border represents the basement membrane. when thickened, there is damage to the tissue. PAS can be used to detect damage to kidney tissue
What does this picture demonstrate?
A - breathing becomes more shallow; diagnosis is pulmonary fibrosis
what does the red color represent in the cells at the arrow?
A - RNA
B - DNA
C - Glycogen
D - Lipofuscin
E - Lysosomes
B - DNA; Feulgen reactions stain DNA and are used for detecting nuclear cancer changes
What stain is being used and what diagnosis can you make based on the following picture
Hemachromatosis and Prussian blue; the blue identifies abnormal accumulation of iron in the liver tissue
What kind of stain can be used to identify amyloid?
Congo Red
Marfan syndome commonly leads to the thinning of the elastic fiber layer of the aortic valve. What staining technique would you use to identify this layer?
A. Prussian Blue
B. Verhoeff
C. Hematoxylin
D. PAS
B. Verhoeff; Verhoeff stains elastic fibers ad can be used to detect Marfan syndrome
What provides a better picture: normal cell sectioning or frozen cell sectioning?
Normal cell sectioning provides a better picture; frozen sectioning is helpful, however, when you need to run a test quickly for diagnostic purposes
What is the diagnoses based on this picture?
tumor of epithelial origin; the immunocytochemistry used is tagging cytokeratin; this is seen as the brown color. cytokeratin is characteristic of epithelial tissue
Name that disease…go!
Kaposi Sarcoma; a cancer that rises from endothelial cells; the picture depicts the proliferation of lymphatic vessels which are tagged brown
which picture is more succeptible to hormone replacement therapy? which has the worse prognosis? what staining technique is used?
the left picture is one of estrogen receptor over-expression. this cancer is more responsive to hormone replacement. the right picture demonstrates an overexpression of HER2/NEU receptors and has a poor prognosis. the technique demonstrated is ICC
What can FISH be used for?
To stain cells as to determine if there is an aneuploidy of chromosomes or an amplification of a given gene; can be used to diagnos trisomy 21, Myc mutation leading to overexpression, and overexpression of HER2/Neu
Based on the below picture, diagnose the patient and name the techniques used in the bottom left and right pictures
the patient has HPV; the bottom left picture is using a light micrograph and the right picture is using in situ hybridization for the HPV virus. the brown spots indicate HPV-containing cells
