Ages: 0-1
Source of satisfaction: Mouth, Sucking, Chewing, biting
Primary Conflict: Weaning
Task: Martery of gratification of oral needs, beginning of ego development (4-5mo)
Desired Outcomes: Development of trust in environment, with realization that needs can be met
Anal
Ages (1-3)
Source of Satisfaction: Anal region (expulsion and retention)
Primary conflict: Toilet training
Task: Beginning of development of a sense of control over instinctual drives; ability to delay immediate gratification to gain a future goal
Desired outcomes: Control over impulses
Phalic (Oedipal)
Ages: 3-6
Masterbation
Task: Sexual identity with parent of same sex, beginning of super ego
Fixation may result in reckless, self assured and narcissistic person
Lack or resolution: inability to love and difficulties with sexual identity
Latency
Ages 6-12
Growth of ego functions (Social intellectual, mechanical). Ability to care about and relate to others outside of the home (peers of the same sex)
The development of skills needed to cope with environment
Fixation can result in difficulty identifying with others, difficulty in developing social skills, leading to a sense of inadequacy and inferiority
Genital
12yr and beyond
Sexual intercourse
Development of satisfying sexual and emotional relationships
Emancipation from parents - planning life goals and development of sense of personal identity
Ability to be creative and find pleasure in love and work
Inability to negotiate this stage may derail emotional and financial independence, may impair personal identity and future goals, disrupt ability to form satisfying intimate relationships.
