Infancy
TRUST vs MISTRUST
Ages: 0-1.5 years
Developmental Task: Forming attachment to mother - lays foundation for later trust in others.
Successful resolution of crisis: Sound basis for relating to other people, trust in people, faith and hope about environment and future. “If he’s picking me up late, there must be a reason.”
Unsuccessful: General difficulties relating to people effectively, suspicion, trust-fear conflict, fear of future. “I can’t trust anyone, no one has ever been there when I needed them.”
Early Childhood
AUTONOMY vs SHAME
Ages: 1.5 - 3
Developmental task: Gaining some basic control of self and environment
Successful res: Sense of self-control and adequate will power
Unsuccessful res: Independence/fear of conflict, severe feelings of self doubt.
Preschool
INITIATIVE vs GUILT
Ages: 3-6
Developmental task: Becoming purposeful and directive
Successful res: Ability to initiate ones own activities, sense of purpose
Unsuccessful res: aggression/fear of conflict, sense of inadequacy or guilt
School Age
INDUSTRY vs INFERIORITY
Ages: 6-12
Developmental Task: Developing social, physical, and school skills
Successful res: Competence, ability to work
Unsuccessful res: Sense of inferiority, difficulty learning and working
Adolescence
IDENTITY vs ROLE CONFUSION
Ages: 12-20
Developmental task: Making transition from childhood to adulthood, developing sense of identity
Successful res: Sense of personal identity, fidelity
Unsuccessful res: Confusion about who one is, weak sense of self
Early Adulthood
INTIMACY vs. ISOLATION
Ages: 20-35
Developmental task: Establishing intimate bonds of live and friendship
Successful: Ability to love deeply and commit oneself
Unsuccessful res: Emotional isolation, egocentricity
Middle adulthood
Generativity vs. Self absorption
Ages: 35-65
Developmental: Fullfilling life goals that involve family, career, and society. Developing concerns that embrace future generations.
Successful res: Ability to give and care for others
Unsuccessful res: self-absorption, inability to grow as a person
Later years
INTEGRITY vs DESPAIR
Ages: 65-death
Developmental task: Looking back over ones life and accepting it’s meaning
Successful: Sense of integrity and fulfillment, willingness to face death, wisdom.
Unsuccessful res: Dissatisfaction with life. Denial of or despair over prospect of death.
