Training, Health, Therapeutic

Sports Skill, body movements produced for success, and Developmental skills, fine motor control skills.

motor behavior, biomechanics, exercise physiology, sport sociology, sport psychology, therapeutic recreation, and sports management.
What is philosophy?
Seeking a higher understanding of present situations
What does philosophical thinking help us do as exercise scientists?
It helps us better deal with the tough questions
How do we do philosophy?
It is done by asking questions, arguing, trying out ideas and thinking of possible arguments against them, and wondering how our concerts really work
List the four ways we “philosophize.”
Reflect on experience, use logic, appeal to common sense, and deploy conclusions.
Be able to describe deductive reasoning?
Starts with one or more broad premises to identify conclusions that follow from them
List and describe the three philosophies behind the mind-body relationship?
Materialsim- everything is made up of atoms and void
Dualism- brain and body similarity to a machine, thoughts and emotions change behavior
Holism- Development of our body by our thoughts. Our thoughts are shaped by our state of mind
Be able to distinguish between games and sport, competition, and play
A sport is a game meant to test our motor skills and abilities. Competition is wanting to perform at the highest level. Play can be anything
What was the primary purpose for physical activity in the 6th century BC?
to survive and prepare for battle
What significant happenings were occurring in the US during 1840-1900 that helped change physical activity?
Farm life turned to factory life; less and less reliance on physical activity
Where did the primary forms of physical activity come from during that period and what were they? What role did immigrants play?
Turnvereins and Calisthenics; Immigrants brought sports with them and that was a way o bond and to keep their cure alive
When was the field of Physical Education started?

Sports became a big entertainment hit

PA was down to all time low and sports few as a spectator event

training, observation of practice, and personal participation
Know the two major factors that influence PA experience and their sub-factors?
Social Environment- parents, peers, teachers/coaches
Personal Circumstances- physical attributes, geography, economic considerations
Know the difference between practice and training
Practice is learning and development a skill, Training is conditioning and becoming stronger
Know what immediate and replayed subjective experiences are and what they can do for an individual’s perception of their experience
Immediate is how you feel after a practice and replayed is self-reflective on an experience
Know and be able to describe the three components of subjective experiences?
Sensations and perceptions, emotions and responses, and knowledge
Know and be able to describe the three factors affecting subjective physical activity enjoyment. Also be able to describe the sub factors within each factor
