TEST 1 Flashcards
Raceway
is a flow through system that allows water to flow continuously in a artificial canal or channel into a pond. This also helps with dead spot drains.
Swirl Separators
The swirl separator is a device that can be used to filter out larger particles found in tanks. It works by having an inlet pipe from the aquarium swirl water in a cylindrical-shaped tank.
Radial flow separator
Use a calm zone to settle out the denser particulate matter
Drum separators
Water is exposed to a rotating screen, clean water passes filter and particles are collected on said screen. The screen is cleaned later on.
Intensive culture system
method of farming aquatic organisms in a controlled environment where high stock densities maintained
fouling
is the accumulation of microorganisms, plants, algae, or animals on wetted surfaces
headstart
young aquatic organisms are raise in a controlled condition before released
Oxidation is adding oxygen to make a new compound
true
Photogtrophic larvae like light
true
Open system
water is used once then discarded
Semi-closed system
some water discared, some kept and mixed with new water
Closed system
All water recirculated
biofilters
use bacteria to convert ammonia to non-toxic nitrates
Zooplankton
Rotifers and copepods
Redundancy System:
A redundancy system is a system that has multiple components or systems in place to ensure that services continue even if one component fails. (A Backup)
Artemia
Artemia is a genus of aquatic crustaceans also known as brine shrimp The ability of the Artemia to produce dormant eggs, known as cysts, has led to extensive use of Artemia in aquaculture.
Nauplii
the first larval stage of many crustaceans, having an unsegmented body and a single eye.
Poikilothermic
An organism with a variable body temperature that tends to fluctuate with and is similar to or slightly higher than the temperature of its environment : a cold-blooded organism
Diffuser
Air diffusers are an efficient and economical way to introduce oxygen (or other gasses) into the water.
Heat exchanger
A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer heat between a solid object and a fluid, or between two or more fluids. The fluids may be separated by a solid wall to prevent mixing or they may be in direct contact
Nitrobacter
Nitrobacter is a genus comprising rod-shaped, gram-negative,
Biofloc
A suspended solid system (particles are usually less than 1 mm in diameter) composed of microbes and solid waste that provide two critical services in aquaculture systems—treating wastes from feeding and providing nutrition from floc consumption.
Nauplii (visual description)
Bug like, fat and round, six legs
Dead Zone
hypoxic, low oxygen, areas. In aquaculture, it also refers to an area in which there is no water current so that solids tend to settle out.
Brown system Biofloc
utilizes bacteria to (1) remove nitrogen from the tank and (2) enrich the uneaten food particles and/or waste to provide additional nutrition which can reduce feed costs.
Green System Biofloc
similar to brown biofloc systems but incorporate algae. This additional feature requires adequate levels of light. If a green biofloc system crashes, it can turn into a brown biofloc system.
Linear
a plastic sheeting implemented at the bottom of a tank to prevent leaching of contaminates, etc.
Slope
a surface which has a high elevation on one side causing a horizontal/vertical incline (rising/falling) which helps immensely with erosion control.
Sump
lowest part of an aquatic system in which water collects
Fouling-
is the accumulation of microorganisms, plants, algae, or animals on wetted surfaces
