Which muscle is this?
O – Pubic tubercles ( = crest), pubic symphysis *
I – Cartilages of ribs 5, 6, 7 & Xyphoid process
A – Flexion of trunk (bilaterally), *Compression of abdomen.

Rectus Abdominus
Which muscle is this?
O - Lateral inguinal ligament, iliac crest & TCA
I - Internal surface of ribs 12 -10, abdominal aponeurosis to linea alba.
A – Bilateral – trunk flexion
Unilateral – trunk lateral flexion and rotation to same side (ipsilateral)
*Compression of abdomen
*angles upward toward AML
Internal Oblique
Which muscle is this?
O – Lateral inguinal ligament, iliac crest, TCA, & internal surface of lower 6 ribs.
I – Abdominal aponeurosis to linea alba.
A – Compression of abdomen, assists in forced expiration
Transversus Abdominus
Which muscle is this?
O –External aspect of 8 lower ribs (= 5-12)
I – Anterior 1/2 of external iliac crest, abdominal aponeurosis to linea alba
A – Bilaterally – trunk flexion
Unilaterally – Trunk: lateral flexion to same side, trunk rotation to opposite side (contralateral)
*Compression of abdomen.
*angles downward toward AML
External Oblique
Which muscle is this?
O - dorsal aspect of xyphoid process, internal surfaces of lower 6 ribs, L 1-2 or 3.
I - Central tendon (located just anterior to the center of the dome)
A - Draw down the central tendon of the diaphragm
Diaphragm
Which muscle is this?
O – Inferior border of rib above.
I – Superior border of rib below.
A – Assist with inspiration
“Lifts the bucket handle” and “pump handle”
External Intercostal
Which muscle is this?
O: Iliac crest (posterior)
I: TP’s of L 1-4
A: Unilateral: flex spin to same side, laterally tilt pelvis, also: assists in extending spine
Quadratus Lumborum
Which muscle is this?
O- Bodies & TP’s (& discs) L 1-5
I – Lesser trochanter of femur (posterior aspect)
A – Origin fixed: Hip: flexion, ADduction, maybe: lateral rotation
Insertion fixed (“Reverse” action =leg remains fixed):
- pelvis anterior tilt, contralateral rotation of lumbar vertebrae, ipsilateral lateral flexion of lumbar vertebrae
Psoas
Which muscle is this?
O – Superior border of rib below
I – Inferior border of rib above
A – Assist with exhalation
Internal Intercostal
Which muscle is this?
O – Internal iliac fossa
I – Lesser trochanter of femur
A - Hip flexion, ADduction, rotation (lateral)
Reverse action – pelvis anterior tilt
Iliacus
Which muscle is this?
O – Posterior iliac crest, dorsal surfaces of sacrum & coccyx, sacrotuberous & sacroiliac ligaments
I – IT band (superficial fibers) & gluteal tuberosity (deep fibers)
A- Hip: Extension, lateral rotation, Abduction, some ADduction (lower fibers)
Pelvis:Extension (distal attachment fixed)
Gluteus Maximus
Which muscle is this?
O - Lateral (gluteal) surface of the ilium (b/w superior & anterior gluteal lines)
I- Greater trochanter (lateral superior aspect)
A - All fibers: ABduct the hip
Anterior fibers: flex the hip, medially rotate the
hip
Posterior fibers: extend the hip, laterally rotate the hip
Gluteus Medius
Which muscle is this?
O – Lateral (gluteal) surface of the ilium (b/w superior & anterior gluteal lines)
I – Greater trochanter (anterior border)
A – Abduction of hip, medial rotation of hip, hip flexion
Gluteus Minimus
Which muscle is this?
O – Iliac crest (lateral/posterior to ASIS)
I – IT Band
A – Abduction of hip, medial rotation of hip, hip flexion
Tensor Fascia Lata

O – Anterior border of the sacrum
I – Greater trochanter (superior aspect)
A – Lateral rotation of hip, Abduction when hip is flexed to 90 degrees
Piriformis
