What are the 4 strands of the Contest Strategy?
Prevent, Pursue, Protect and Prepare
What does Prevent do?
Stop people becoming radicalised and becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.
What does Pursue do?
Stop terrorist attacks by detecting and investigating threats at the earliest stage
What does Protect do?
Strengthen protection, strengthen UK border security and improve protection in crowded places
What does Prepare do?
Mitigate impact of a terrorist attack, prepare for an aftermath and make sure emergency services are prepared.
What are the principle aims in the 2011 preventive strategy?
- Challenge ideology that supports and promotes terrorism
- Protect vulnerable people
- Support sectors and institutions where there are risks of radicalisation occuring
What is included as a terrorist offence in the Terrorism Act 2006?
The use or threat of action which glorifies the commission or preparation
In Wilkinson (2006) what is the 4 criteria for an attack to be a terrorist act?
- Always pre-meditated
- Has a symbolic element
- Extra normal (abnormal)
- Used to influence political behaviour
What does the National Intelligence model do?
Connects high and low policing agencies
What does the police special powers do in regards to terrorist suspects?
- Extends detention for 27 days
