Terrarium enclosure Flashcards

1
Q

POTZ

A

(Preferred Optimal Temperature Zone)

Reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates are ectothermic animals and
cannot control their own body temperature.

All animals should be kept in species specific POTZ. To measure correct temperature in a terrarium multiple thermometers
are necessary.

Q

Heating of the terrarium can be done in different ways, name 5

A

Basking heat
Ground heat
Room temperature
Heating cords inside the terrarium walls
Heating stick in water

Choosing which one to use depends mostly from the animals that is kept
in the terrarium.

Q

Basking spot lamps allow the reptile to

A

regulate their own body temperature by changing their location in the terrarium.

Basking spot lamps provide an intense vertical beam of heat energy throughout the terrarium.

Q

Nocturnal infrared lamps produce

A

long wave infra-red heat, that
penetrates the scales and the skin, increases blood circulation and widens blood vessels.

Should be used with reptiles who are nocturnal.

Q

Ground heat is the kind of heating is good for reptiles who

A

spend a substantial amount of time on the ground.

Useful only in terrariums with thin substrate, cooler locations or burrowing animals.

As ground heat heating mats, heating cables or hot rocks can be used.

Q

Heating rocks are designed to replicate

A

the natural basking process in all
lizards and snakes.

Can burn reptile, causing injuries and sometimes even death. Should be avoided if possible.

Q

UVB light is crucial for the production of

A

Vitamin D3, calcium absorption,
metabolic functions and growth.

The UV-lamps should be placed about 30cm from the animal.

UV-lighting requirement vary between species.

16
Q

Sand substrate is suitable for

A

desert species.

17
Q

Bark substrate (mulch) is suitable for

A

most reptiles and invertebrates.

18
Q

Peat, soil, moss substrate is good for

A

amphibians, tarantulas, snakes and some lizards.

19
Q

Litter substrate is good for

A

most invertebrates and tortoises but not for lizards, because they tend to eat it.

Only special litters for reptiles should be used.

20
Q

Good ventilation is especially important in

A

humid terrariums.

For frogs, chameleons, day geckos, tropical snakes.

21
Q

What enclosure parameter is important for moulting?

A

humidity

22
Q

Level of humidity should always be checked with a

A

hygrometer.

23
Q

What meter should be found in a terrarium?

A

multiple thermometers in addition to a hydrometer (measures humidity) for most animals.

24
Q

How should wooden logs be treated before placing in a terrarium?

A

cooked in an oven

some people boil

25
Q

What terrarium reptiles may eat live plants planted in their terrarium?

A

Tortoises and herbivorous lizards tend to eat live plants.

26
Q

Plants suitable to terrariums

A

Tillandsia or other “air plant”
Philodendrons
Tradescantia ( Wandering jew)
Orchids
Aloe Vera and cactuses (Not for herbivorous lizards and tortoises)
Ficus
Tropical fig trees (Fiscus)
