Jail
een gevangenis= People are locked up here for minor crimes, for short periods of time and are awaiting court dates.
prison
een gevangenis= people are locked up here for serious crimes, for long periods of time (+1y) and were already found guilty.
misdemeano(u)r
een misdrijf= A minor crime for which you’re maximum 1 year in jail or get a 1000$ fine. Probation is possible. (in England this is just a small mistake, no offense)
felony
een misdaad= A serious crime which lands you in state prison or for which you get a 10 000$ fine. Charges can lead up to a life in prison or the death penalty.
probation
een voorwaardelijke straf/ proeftijd= A sentence for minor offences that doesn’t require offendors to go to jail. They will be supervised and they have to prove good behaviour.
parole
voorwaardelijke vrijlating= An early release after the offendor has already spent some time in prison. Certain conditions need to be met for them to not return.
first-degree murder
moord= this murder was premeditated, so there was a clear intention to kill.
second-degree murder
doodslag= happens in the heat of the moment, there was no intention to kill, also called a crime of passion.
manslaughter
onvrijwillige doodslag= someone was killed in an accident, there was no intention to kill.
incarceration
een opsluiting = the act of putting/ keeping someone in prison
rehabilitation
reclassering = the process of re-educating an offender with the goal to re-integrate them into society
an offender
een overtreder = a person who commits a crime
an inmate
een gevangene = a person who is kept in prison
an attorney (a solicitor in BE)
een advocaat = a person who practices law and works as a lawyer
a defendant
een beklaagde = someone who is accused of having done something illegal
a prosecutor
een aanklager = a lawyer who accuses someone of commiting a crime
to charge with
beschuldigen van = to make a formal statement saying that someone is accused of a crime
a conviction
een veroordeling = the fact of officially being found guilty of a particular crime
to sentence to
veroordelen tot = to decide and say officially what a punishment will be
to re-offend
opnieuw een overtreding plegen = to commit a crime again
