Abduction
Movement away from the midline of the body.
Adduction
Movement toward the midline of the body.
Anasarca
Severe generalized edema.
Amenorrhea
Absence of menstruation.
Ascites
Abnormal accumulation of fluid in the
abdomen.
Brudzinski’s sign
A test for meningitis. Severe neck stiffness causes a patient’s hips and knees to flex when the neck is flexed.
Cachexia
Severe malnutrition and wasting of muscles associated with a chronic illness such as cancer.
Cranial nerves
12 pairs of nerves that originate from the undersurface of the brain.
Crepitus
Dry, crackling sound or sensation heard or felt as a joint is moved through its range of motion.
Cyanosis
A bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes.
Deep tendon reflex
A brisk contraction of a muscle in response to a sudden stretch induced by a sharp tap by a finger or rubber hammer on the tendon of insertion of the muscle.
Dysuria
Difficulty, pain, or burning sensation associated with urination.
Emesis
Another word for vomit.
Enuresis
Any involuntary urination, especially during sleep.
Gravida
Denotes number of pregnancies.
Hematuria
Blood in the urine.
Hypercapnia
Excessive carbon dioxide in the blood.
Hypospadias
Abnormal congenital opening of the male urethra on the undersurface of the penis.
Incontinent
Having no or insufficient voluntary control over urination or defecation.
Kernig’s sign
A test in which the thigh is bent at the hip and knee at 90 degree angles and the knee is extended. If extension of the knee is painful, this may indicate subarachnoid hemorrhage or meningitis.
Linea nigra
Dark line on the abdomen that runs from above the umbilicus to the pubis during pregnancy.
McBurney point
Point of specialized tenderness in acute appendicitis that is situated on a line between the umbilicus and the right anterosuperior iliac spine, about 1 or 2 inches above the latter.
Murphy’s sign
A test for gallbladder disease in which the patient is asked to inhale while the examiner’s fingers are hooked under the liver border at the bottom of the rib cage. Produces pain if the gallbladder is inflamed.
Oliguria
Decreased urine output.
Paresthesia
Sensation of numbness, prickling, or tingling.
Parity
Denotes the number of viable births.
Polyuria
Excessive production of urine.
Pronate
o turn the forearm so the palm faces downward or to rotate the leg or foot inward.
Romberg’s test
Test of cerebellar function that evaluates an individual’s ability to maintain a given position when standing erect with feet together and eyes closed.
Somatic pain
Pain that originates from musculoskeletal tissues or body surfaces.
Supinate
To turn the forearm so the palm faces upward or to rotate the foot and leg outward.
Two-point discrimination
Ability to distinguish the separation of two simultaneous pinpricks on the skin.
Void
Another word for urinate.

narrowed opening of preduce so cannot retract the foreskin
paraphimosis
painful constriction of glans by retracted foreskin
cryptorchidism
a condition in which one or both testes has failed to fall from the abdomen into the scrotum
