what is the anatomical position
Standing up straight facing forward with your hands by your side with plams facing forward.
what are the 3 anatomical planes
Prone: lying face down position
Supine: lying face upwards on your back
Recumbent: lying on your side eg. right lateral recumbent.
What is anatomical directional terminology
Directional terms are used to actuarially describe the location of a body part
What are the 4 terms used for directional terminology
- Frontal plane: a vertical plane that devides the body in half. ( splits the body in half from the side exposing the front of the body.
- Sagittal plane: splits vertically through the body dividing it into left and right.
- Mid Sagital: centre of the body dividing it into equal left and right
- Transverse plane: cuts in half from stomach looking down.
What is the term to describe towards the head
Superior
e.g the heart is superior to the head
What is the term to describe further from the head
Inferior
e.g. stomach is inferior to the lungs
What is the term to describe towards the back of the body
Prosterior
What is the term to describe towards the front of the body
Anterior
What is the term to describe nearer to the attachment of a limb of a trunk.
Proximal
e.g the upper arm is proximal to the lower arm
What is the term to describe further from the attachment of a limb or a trunk
Distal
e.g the finger tips are distal to the upper hand
What is the term to describe towards or on the surface of the body
Superficial
What is the term to describe away from surface of the body
deep
what are the 4 directional terms
- Unilateral: one side if the body only
- Bilateral: both sides of the body
- Ipsilateral: same side of the body
- Contralateral: opposite sides of the body
What is the Axial region
head neck and trunk
What is the appendicular region
upper and lower limbs
upper: arm, wrist, hand finger
Lower: leg, ankle, foot, toes
