Terms of Anatomical Movement Flashcards
Flexion
A bending action that decreases the angle between two body parts.
Extension
A straightening action that increases the angle between two body parts.
Abduction
Moving a body part away from the median plane in the coronal plane
Hyperextension
Bending a joint beyond its straight position \
Adduction
Moving a body part towards the median plane in the coronal (frontal) plane
Rotation
Moving a body part around its long axis
Medial rotation is toward the median plane (palm up)
Lateral rotation is away from the medial plane (palm down)
Circumduction
A circular motion that uses flexion extension, abduction and adduction
Example: warming shoulders up, hip circles
Cone shape in space
Pronation
The medial rotation of the forearm so the palm faces posterior
(dogs, cats)
Supination
Lateral rotation of the forearm so the palm faces anteriorly
(bones are parallel to each other)
Inversion
Turning the foot medially
(toes pointing in)
Eversion
Turning the foot laterally
(toes pointing outward)
Protrusion (protraction)
Moving the mandible anteriorly
(underbite movement)
Retrusion (retraction)
Moving the mandible posteriorly
(overbite movement)
Plantar flexion
Depression of the foot
Dorsiflexion
Elevation of the foot
