TERMS Lessons 4-5 (8.1/8.2) Flashcards
System
a group of parts that work together to function as a whole
Open: energy and matter can enter and leave
Closed: energy can enter and leave, but matter cannot
(def. Positive/negative) feedback loop
Feedback loop: part of a system’s output is returned to the input
Positive: speeds up warming
Negative: slows down warming
Electromagnetic radiation
form of energy emitted in waves (light) or particles (photons)
ex. radio waves, x-rays, and microwave waves.
Energy budget
balance of energy that the earth absorbs and emits (back into space).
Thermohaline circulation
movement of ocean currents due to changes in temperatures and salinity (amount of salt dissolved in the water)
Concentration
amount of substance per defined space
Anthropogenic greenhouse effect
Human actions causing greenhouse gases to be emitted into the atmosphere
Greenhouse gases
A gas in the atmosphere that absorbs and emits infrared radiation.
Ozone (layer)
thin part of Earth’s atmosphere that absorbs harmful ultraviolet light (radiation)
CFCs
gases containing chlorine, fluoride, and carbon. they harm earth’s ozone layer.
Global Warming Potential
A measure of how much heat a greenhouse gas will trap
