Neurology
The study of the nervous system
Neuron
Basic Structural and functional cell of the NS: working unit (responsible) ((Head coach))
Neuroglia
Connects and supports nervous tissue, but do not transmit impulses (team members)
Axon
Extension that carries impulses away from the neuron cell body
Myelin Sheath
A fatty covering
Dendrites
short and often highly branches extensions of the cel body, they receive impulses from the axon of other neurons and transmit these impulses toward the cell body
Synapse
Space between an axon of 1 neuron and dendrites of the next. Can transmit impulses in only one direction relating to location of neurotransmitters
Neuro Transmitter
Chemical released by an axon to allow nerve impulses to cross synapse to reach other dendrites
Interneurons
Links between motor and sensory, found only in CNS
Sensory
Nerves are made up only of sensory neurons; receive and transmits TO CNS from all parts of the body
Motor
Receive and transmit messages FROM CNS to all body parts
Spinal Nerves
carries info to muscle and glands
CNS
Made up of the brain spinal cord and accessory structures
Cerebrum
Largest part of the brain (80%) , Divided into two hemispheres.
Cerebellum
Second largest part of the brain, four lobes
