Terms For The Mole Test Flashcards
What is the percentage composition
The percentage of each element in a compound by mass
What is the empirical formula
The smallest natural number ratio of the different atoms in a molecule
What is the molecular formula
The actual number of each type of atom in a molecule of a compound
What is solvation
The interaction between the solute and the solvent
When the solvent is water we say the dissolved solute is undergoing hydration
Dissociation reaction
A dissolving reaction where an ionic compound releases its ions
The ions separate from each other when the solute dissolves
Ionization reaction
Formation of ions from a neutral covalent molecule
Concentration of each ion
moles of the ion/ total volume
What does a hydrate look like
Anhydrous compound/ #H2O
The concentration of a solute in a solution
The amount dissolved per unit of volume
A concentrated solution
A large amount of solute dissolved per unit volume
A dilute solution
A small amount of solute dissolved per unit of volume
The molar concentration
The number of moles of solute dissolved per litre of solution
Simple dilution
Dilute a solution by adding more solvent
Involves only adding solvent to the solution the moles before and after will be the same
Complex dilution
Two solutions with the same solute are combined
Involves combining both moles and solvent from both solutions the moles before and after will be the same
Molar mass
carbon 12 atoms in 12g of Carbon 12
Mass of one mole of any king of particle
The masses of individual atoms are defined using the unified atomic mass (u)
SI unit for amount
Equal to Avogadro’s number 6.02x10^23
