Terms Flashcards
what is nomenclature
the terms used to describe human dentition, the surfaces and identifying characteristics
dental arch
teeth, gingiva, and associated bone
maxillary arch
the upper arch including the associated teeth
mandibular arch
the lower arch and associated teeth
what moves in the mouth and how
ONLY the mandible, rotates and translates around the TMJ

what is the crown covered with
enamel
what is the root covered with
cementum
enamel=
the dense hydroxyapatite surface of the crown
dentin=
the inner hard layer of the crown and root
pulp=
the vascular innervated portion of the tooth
cementum=
the outer layer of the root surface
DEJ=
DentoEnamel Junction, junction of enamel and dentin layers
CEJ=
CementoEnamel Junction, junction of enamel and cementum layers
Cervical line
the junction of the anatomical crown and root
Clinical crown=
the portion of the tooth that is visible in the mouth
Anatomical crown=
the crown above the CEJ
What are all the surfaces?
facial, lingual, mesial and distal
Facial surface=
aka buccal/labial, the outer most one
Lingual surface=
the inner most surface on the side of the tongue
Mesial surface=
towards the median line
Distal surface=
away from the median line
Incisal surface
the biting edge on anterior teeth
Occlusal surface
the biting edge of posterior teeth
Cusp=
projection on a crown
Fossa=
depression or concavity between cusps or ridges
Ridge=
the linear elevation on the surface of a tooth, named according to its location
Cingulum=
the lingual crown projection on anterior teeth
