Metaphor
A word or phrase compare to a feeling or action without using like or as.
Simile
A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid.
Imagery
Visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work
Symbol
A person, place, or thing in literary work that figuratively represents something else. Often the idea represented is abstract, while the symbol itself is concrete
Allusion
An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference.
Dramatic Irony
A plot device in which a character has an expierence that is unexpected to him or her, but that the audience has anticipated because our knowledge of the situation is more complete than the character’s
Verbal Irony
A statement in which there is a large difference between the literal meaning and the implied meaning. (Puns)
Paradox
A seemingly absurd or self- contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true.
Oxymoron
A figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction.
Foreshadowing
A warning or indication of a future event.
Sililoquy
Character presents a long, uninterprreted speech while alone on stage.
Monologue
Character presents a long, uninterrupted speech while other characters listen.
Sonnet
A poem of 14 lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes; in English typically having 10 syllables per line. Shakespearean sonnet: Rhyme scheme (ABAB/ CDCD/ EFEF/ GG) and Meter (Iambic pentameter)
Blank Verse
Unrhymed iambic pentameter. (5 beats per line)
Free Verse
Poetry that does not rhyme and has no regular meter.
