Terms Flashcards
Acids
Substances having a pH below 7.0; has an extra hydrogen ion
Aerosols
The vapourization or dispersion of liquid droplets, solid particles, and combustions of these in a fine spray or mist
Autoclave
Sterilizing chamber which uses high temperature, high pressure stream
Bases
Substances having a pH above 7.0; slippery to touch in an aqueous solution
Biohazard
Biological substances that pose a threat to the health of living organisms
Blood-borne pathogens
Infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease in humans
Carcinogenicity
Ability or tendency of a substance/agent to directly cause cancer
Centrifuge
Machine with a rapidly rotating container that applies centrifugal force to separate fluids of different densities or liquids from solids
Chemical hazards
Inherent hazards associated with chemicals within the workplace
Corrosives
Substances that can damage and destroy body tissues or other materials
Cryogenic agents
Substance that can be used to cool an object to cryogenic temperatures (below -150 degrees C)
Disinfectants
Liquid chemical that is able to destroy bacteria
Flash point
Temperature at which a particular compound gives off enough vapour to ignite in air
Fume hood
Ventilated enclosure, typically a laboratory, in which harmful chemicals can be used or kept
Hazardous wastes
Wastes with properties that make them dangerous or potentially harmful to human health or the environment
