terms Flashcards
one to one correspondence
matching one object to another object and matching one object to one count word
organization
the process of developing strategies to keep track of objects that have been counted and those that have not
magnitude
understanding the relative amount of a group of objects without counting
rote counting
saying the counting words out loud without understanding they’re connected to quantity
part/whole relationship
quantities can be decomposed into parts and then recomposed into those parts to make a whole
conservation
understanding that the quantity of a group remains the same regardless of its size of objects in the group or organization of the objects
cardinality
connecting numbers to an amount when counting. the last word said represents the group size.
subitizing
instantly perceiving a small amount without counting. lays the foundation for addition and subtraction.
conceptual subitizing
requires students to recognize smaller groups within a larger group. ex. a group of 7 dots seen as 6 and 1
perceptual
means to think in groups or seeing a number of objects w/o counting by ones. ex. showing a child a group of 3 blocks and having them identify 3 w/o counting
hierarchical inclusion
the understanding that whole number quantities grow by one each time the next number in the counting sequence is said. previous quantities are nested in the target quantity.
