group of people who all do the same thing, belong to the same guild. Ex. Bakers belong to a guild.

Time of rebirth. Studying what you are interested in
What is a Protestantism?
Very large group. Reformation from the church
What Sola Scriptura?
reject church writings, formed by Martin Luther. Tied to Protestantism.
What is a Jesuits?
rooted in catholic reformation, connected to colonialism, main teachers during colonialism.
What is Nationalism?
identifying oneself with their nation.
What is Imperialism?
dominating other places of the world. If you aren’t strong enough to fight us, we will take over.
What is the Sense Realism?
(naturalism) realising the world is created by God, therefore by studying the world we are closer to God.
What is Empiricism?
in order to prove something you don’t need to believe in Aristotle, actually have measurements to figure out things.
What is Progressivism?
things are going to get better and progress more, tomorrow will be further advanced
What is Abolitionism?
(enlightenment) abolish of slavery
What is Capitalism?
- an economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.
- system of government that focuses on the capital, very market/business driven
What is Philology?
study of language/texts. Renaissance. Fascination in recovering old classic texts like Cicero.
What is Crusades?
holy wars, usually towards
Muslim, but also into Spain
What is Merchant Republic?
Italian city states in the renaissance. Rising merchant class at this time, very republic group. Mulan, Venus (Italian renaissance)
What is Predestination?
Calvinism. French Protestantism. You are determined if you are going to hell or heaven when you are born, doesn’t matter how you act in life.
What is Counter (Catholic) Reformation?
Roman Catholic Churches response to protestant reformation, they are reorganizing themselves.
What is Grammar School?
late 1800s, reading, writing, arithmetic.
What is Colonialism?
the control or governing influence of a nation over a dependent country, territory, or people.
What is Liberalism?
‘free’ in Latin, free government
What is Deism?
religion of the enlightenment, believe there is a god but he doesn’t interact with the material world
What is Philosophes?
French, philosophes were public intellectuals who applied reason to the study of many areas of learning, including philosophy, history, science, politics, economics, and social issues
What is Urbanization?
moving from rural areas to urban areas, seen in industrial revolution
What is Social Darwinism?
certain people are inferior because of their race, applying Darwinism’s to social class
What is Marxism?
communism
