Terms Flashcards
Digestion
The break down of large insoluble food molecules into small water soluble molecules using mechanical and chemical processes
Absorption
Moving digested molecules from the alimentary canal into the blood stream or lymph so they can be transported around the body
Assimilation
Movement of absorbed food molecules into the cell where they are used and become part of the cells
Egestion
Removal of indigestible food such as fibre by passing it through faeces
Where is bile made and stored
Made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder
What’s bile
A yellow green fluid made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder. It is alkaline and neutralises acids and emulsifies fats by breaking down large globules into smaller globules
What is deamination
The breakdown of excess amino acids in the liver to form ammonia which is made into urea
State a function of the liver
The liver breaks down toxins such as alcohol and stores glucose as glycogen
Transpiration
The evaporation of water from the leaves and the loss of water vapour to the atmosphere
What factors affect transpiration [4]
Light
Humid
Warm
Windy
What instrument can be used to measure the rate of water uptake
Potometer
Ingestion
Taking food into the body through the mouth
What do xylem vessels do
Transport water and mineral ions from the root up the stem to the leaves
What do Phloem vessels do
Transport sucrose made in photosynthesis to other parts of the plant
The 2 properties of water to travel up the xylem
Cohesion - water molecules attract to each other sticking together
Adhesion - water molecules stick to the inside of the xylem vessels
