a subregion reffering to Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Vikings home.
Nordic
native to Scandinavia, Finland, Iceland, or the Faroe Islands
Hygge
a concept of comfort and coziness from enjoying simple things in life. Stems from Danish culture
Constituent Country
a type of country that governs themselves under higher power. Ex. UK
Sami
people from northern Europe, oldest culture of the North
Bubonic Plague
Also known as the Black Death, a diseasee that spread through Europe in 1347. Killed 25 million people, about 1/4-1/3 total pop. Spread for 4 years.
Benelux
an economic union of Belguim, Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Influenced by French culture
Reformation
a period when many Christians broke away from the Catholic church and started protestant churches
Fuedalism
a politcal system in which powerful lords owned most of the land and gave land to the nobles for military service; developed nationalism
Nationalism
the belief that people should be loyal to their nation, people, land, etc. Contributed to the rise of modern nation-states
Holocaust
a program of mass murder of 2/3 of European Jews by Adolf Hitler. Divided Germany, 1933 -1945
Balkanization
the process of a region breaking up into small, mutually hostile units.
Slavic
related to eastern Europe; many moved to Europe in 400’s, causing diversity
Ottoman Empire
Empire of Turker that took over Southern Europe in the 1285-1923. Conquered Hungary. austria drove them out. Countries gaining independence led to it’s downfall
Habsburg Empire
a major empire through Europe, fell in WW1. 1282-1918. Collection of empires ruled by monarchy’s ruled over by the House of Habsburg.
Yugoslavia
a country from 1918-1992. Gained Independence after WW1, seperated in 1990’s. Started some of the first democratic movements
Communism
government controls things without say from the people, owned factories, very inefficient and bad. Led to Europe having Market economy
City-state
a political unit made up of a city surrounding lands.
Republic
a government in which citizens elect representative to rule in their name
Crusades
a series of wars to take the Holy Land from the Muslims. Italians supplied money, eventually led wealth and the Renaissance
The Renaissance
a time of renewed interest in learning and the arts, lasted 14th-16th centuries.
