Terms Flashcards
Hydrogen Bond
bond between partially positive hydrogen atoms and partially negative atoms, and it’s weak
Acid
gives H+, produces (H3O) in water
Base
recieves H+, produces (OH-) in water
Amphiprotic
can act as an acid or base, like water
Self Ionization of Water
very rare in pure water, where water dissociates into OH and H3O on its own
Acid-Base tritration
a lab technique to find the concentration of an acid or base by adding a solution until a reaction completes
More H = Lower pH, and Less H = Higher pH
True
Dissociation/Ionization
process of a compound breaking apart in water
Neutralization
chemical reaction between an acid and base that results in the formation of water and salt
Buffers:
- resist changes in pH, by neutralizing small amounts of an added acid or base
- contain a weak acid & conjugate base, or a weak base & conjugate acid
Condensation
gas to liquid
Hydrophilic
loves water
Cohesion
water molecules attracted to other water molecules
Adhesion
water molecules attraction to other molecules
Surface Tension:
- at the surface, molecules are being pulled by other molecules less because they are less surrounded so they cling to nearby molecules tighter, forming tension at the surface
- possible because of cohesion/hydrogen bonding
