Generals Flashcards
What are the 6 properties of water?
- High specific heat
- Capilary Action
- High vaporization temperature
- Surface Tension
- Ice Floats
- Universal Solvent
Trace elements:
elements required in very small quantities (like iron, copper, flourine, iodine, zinc, and maganese), they already exist in the body but make up less than 0.01%
A compound is:
a substance consisting of two or more different elements combined in a fixed ratio
Radioactive isotopes:
can help or harm us, like radioactive iodine can kill cancer but also chernobly yk
The distribution of electrons…
determines an atom’s chemical properties (because it puts their position on the periodic table, like O has one more electron than N and so it isone more to the right)
Ionic bonds are attractions between…?
ions of opposite charges
Water’s hydrogen bonds moderate temperature:
strong hydrogen bonds between water molecules, which require a significant amount of energy to break, meaning it takes a large amount of heat to raise the temperature of water by even a small degree.
therefore water also has high vaporization temperature, as hydrogen bonds must be broken to let molecules become gas.
