terms Flashcards
Epidemiology
the science of dealing with various factors that determine the frequencies and distribution of an infection disease
Endemic, Enzootic
refers to a disease that occurs naturally but in small numbers within a local area (rabies in PA)
epidemic, epizootic
an unusally high prevalence of a disease present in a region, which may be rapidly spreading (flu cases)
morbidity
the ratio of the number of sick animals to the total number of animals involved
mortality
the ratio of the number of dead animals to the total number of animals involved
nosocomial
an infection acquired during hospitalization (kennel cough)
serology
the study of antibodies and antigens in the blood
virulence
the disease producing power of a microorganism
agenesis, aplasia
incomplete, imperfect, or complete lack of development
hypoplasia
underdevelopment of a tissue, organ or limb
dysplasia
an abnormal development of a tissue or organ
atrophy
reduction in size of a previously normal sized organ
ecchymotic hemorrhage
a moderate area of blood accumulation usually seen under the skin (bruise)
petechia
tiny pin-point hemorrhages
vasculitis
inflammation of blood or lymph vessels
emboli
a foreign body within the blood stream
infarct
a region of dead tissue due to a complete interference with blood flow
infection
invasion and multiplication of organisms in the body
incubation
period when disease develops by multiplication of an infectious agent within a host
sub-clinical
when a disease is present without clinical signs
prodromal period
time of mild symptoms
clinical
signs of disease are present
alopecia
partial or complete hair loss
ascites
an abnormal accumulation of serious fluid in the abdomen
caseous
cheese-like exudates
emphysematous
pertaining to an accumulation of air within tissues (bubble wrap under skin)
erosion, ulceration
loss of surface tissue due to inflammation or trauma
exudate
a discharge from the body
fetid
foul odor
hydrothorax
excessive collection of serous fluid in the thoracic cavity
lipidosis
fatty accumulation within a tissue or organ resulting in interference of function
lesion
an alternation from normal in structure or function resulting from injury or disease
lymphadenopathy
an enlargement of lymph nodes
microencephaly
having a smaller than normal brain
mucopurulent
a creamy exudates consisting of mucus and cells
necrotic
dead cells or tissue in contact with living cells
polyarticular
affecting many joints
septicemic
complete systemic involvement of an infectious disease, when a microorganism and its products are throughout the bloodstream
vesicle
a superficial cavity filled with fluid elevated above the surface of the tissue or organ (blister)
viscera
the internal organs of the trunk of the body
