Terms Flashcards
Minimum Viable Population
The minimal population size at which a species is able to sustain its numbers
Effective Population Size
The breeding potential of the population
Movement Corridor
A narrow strip or series of small clumps of habitats connecting otherwise isolated patches; artificial connections to help migration
Critical Load
The amount of added nutrients before the water becomes eutrophic
Extinction Vortex
A small population is vulnerable to inbreeding and genetic drift and becomes smaller and smaller until no individual survives. Usually below MVP and loss of genetic variation&natural selection.
Endangered Species
Are in danger of extinction throughout all or much of its range
Threatened Species
Considered to likely to become endangered in the near future
