Religious marriage
Marriage concluded in terms of a system of religious personal law such a Muslim and Hindu marriages.
Talaq
A divorce that has been initiated by the
husband to a Muslim marriage.
Khul/Khula
A divorce that has been initiated by the
wife to a Muslim marriage
Faskh
A decree of divorce granted by the court
on the application of a wife on any ground permitted by Islamic law
Iddat/Iddah
1) A waiting period of three months after the divorce.
2) During this period the husband
must maintain the wife and provide her
with accommodation.
3) During the waiting
period the wife cannot remarry
Monogamy
Marriage which only allows a party to have one spouse
Polygamy
Marriage which allows more than one
spouse at the same time.
Polygyny
Allows a husband to be married to more
than one wife at the same time.
Polyandry
Allows a wife to be married to more than one husband at the same time
Cohabitative relationship
(Cohabitation)
A relationship where the parties live
together, but they are not married.
Same as domestic partnership.
Same as informal intimate life

The same as a cohabitative relationship.

Formally recognised life partnership
Marriage concluded under the Marriage
Act or the Civil Union Act or the RCMA
Informal intimate life partnership
Includes partnerships which are not
formally recognized, such as religious
marriages and domestic partnerships.
Life partnership
A broad term indicating an intimate life
partnership of 2 persons. Includes
persons who are formally married (all
recognised marriages) and persons who
just live together without being formally
married
