Terminology pt 3 Flashcards
Radioactivity
Emission of ionizing radiation, consequence of nuclear reaction
Polymerization
Small molecules (monomers) combine chainlike called a polymer
Alpha
Positively charged particle only dangerous when ingested
Beta
More penetrating power than alpha. Can travel 7ft. Can burn skin. SCBA can protect you.
Gamma
High energy radiation. Penetrate human tissue. *time, distance and shielding (lead, cement, water) can protect you
Neutron
Substance propensity to release energy or undergo change. Ex: self reaction, polymerization, violent reaction
Water reactivity
Sensitivity of material to water without addition of heat
Riot control gas
“Tear gas” make people unable to function, cause irritation eyes, mouth, throat, lungs and skin
Saturated hydrocarbons
Single bonds
Unsaturated hydrocarbons
“One double bond” or at least “one triple bond”
Aromatic hydrocarbons
“Benzene ring “ six carbon atoms and double bonds. Hazard is toxicity
Self acceleration decomposing temperature
Irreversible decomposing
Solubility
Substance forms solution with water
Solution
Completely dissolved
Slurry
Mixture of solid and liquid
Specific gravity
Weight of souls or liquid compared to equal volume of water. Value is 1. Low=rise High=sink
Strength
Concentration of solution. Corrosive-ionization in acid/water
Sublimation
Solid to vapor phase. Without passing through liquid
Temperature of product
Influences hazards present and measures taken to control an incident involving product
toxic product of combustion
Byproducts of combustion process that harms humans. PPE protect against it.
Vapor density
Weight vapor compared to air
Vapor pressure
Pressure exerted from closed container by vapor space above he liquid inside. Can cause breach when heated. Measured in milliliter.
