terminology general Flashcards
abduction
movement of an extremity away from the midline or median plane
adduction
movement of an extremity toward the midline or medial plane
anatomical position
body standing facing the examiner, arms and hands at the side, and palms turned forward
anterior
toward the front of the body
apex
narrow or pointed end of an anatomical structure (apex of fracture)
coronal
vertical plane the bisects the body into anterior and posterior elements
distal
away from the trunk of the body
eversion
rotational position of a reference point external or away from midline
extension
movement that increases the angle between two body parts
flexion
movement that decreases angle between two body parts
hypertextension
extension of a body part beyond its normal limit
inferior
directly below or downward from a body part
inversion
rotational position of a reference point internal or toward midline
lateral
away from the midline
medial
toward the midline
posterior
toward the back of the body or body part
procurvatum
angulation of a bone where apex of deformity is anterior
pronation
rotation of an anatomical part towards the midline
proximal
near the trunk of the body
recurvatum
angulation of bone where apex of deformity if posterior
rotation
partial revolving of a body part around its long axis
sagittal
imaginary plane passing front to back dividing the body into right and left portions
superior
directly upward or above body part
supination
rotation of the forearm and hand do that the palm faces forward or upward and the radius lies parallel to the ulnar; corresponding to the foot and leg
transverse
imaginary plane passing horizontally through the center of the body at a right angle to the long axis
valgus
deformity where apex is medial
varus
deformity where the apex is lateral
