Terminology Flashcards
1
Q
Virion
A
fully assembled, infective virus particle
- contains genetic material surrounded by a protein shell and in some cases a lipid envelope
2
Q
Capsomer
A
capsids are composed of smaller repetitive subunits termed capsomers
- Capsomers are arranged in two fundamental patterns of structural symmetry:
- Iscosahedral
- Helical
3
Q
Viral envelop
A
In many but not all viruses. This is a lipid membrane that surrounds the capsid
All Helical shaped viruses are surrounded in an envelppe
4
Q
Envelope glycoproteins
A
these are coded for by the viral nucleic acid. These are also called peplomers or spikes
5
Q
Capsid
A
Protien shell that surrounds the viral nucleic acid
6
Q
Protomer
A
Each capsomer is comprised of individual proteins called protomers that self assemble
