standing erect w/ feet flat on the floor, arms at side with palms facing forward
superior
aka: cranial, rostral, or cephalic
toward head or upper part of structure
inferior
aka caudal
away from head or toward lower part of structure
anterior
aka ventral
nearer to or at the front side of the body
supine
body or structure lies anterior side up
prone
body or structure lies anterior side down
pronation
radius rotates around the ulna to bring the palm to face downwards
supination
radius rotates around the ulna to bring the palm to face upwards
posterior
aka dorsal
nearer to or at the back of the body
medial
nearer to the midline of the body or structure (L vs R sides)
Lateral
farther from the midline of the body or structure
Intermediate
between 2 structures
Proximal
nearer to the attachment of an extremity to the trunk or a structure
(nearer to the point of origin)
Distal
farther from the attachment of an extremity to the trunk or structure; farther from point of origin
Superficial
towards or on the surface of the body
Deep
away from the surface of the body
Sagittal plane
vertical plane that divides the body into left and right sides
Midsagittal plane
a vertical plane that passes through the midline and divides the body into = R & L halves
Parasagittal plane
vertical plane that divides the body into un= R & L halves
Coronal (frontal) Plane
vertical plane that divides the body into anterior & posterior portions
Horizontal (transverse) Plane
plane that diviedes the body into superior and inferior portions
Abduction
move away from axis or midline of body, or one of its parts
adduction
move towards axis or midline of body, or 1 of its parts
flexion
folding movement that decreases an angle between 2 bones
