Binomial System
Scientific names, usually consist of 2 words
Example of Binomial System:
Azalea indica
Azalea: first word is the GENUS. Always starts with capital letter.
indica: second word is the SPECIES. Always lowercase (unless someone’s name or country)
Anthophyta (angiosperms)

“Flowering Plant” includes all plants that produce flowers. Seed bearing plants
(Roses, Lettuce, Grasses)
ANTHOPHYTA IS ÷ INTO 2 CLASSES:
Dicotyledonae & Monocotyledonae
Coniferophyta (gymnosperms)

Includes all plants that produce cones. Naked seed bearing plants (seeds produced on the surface of the reproductive structure).

Pterophyta (ferns)

includes plants that reproduce by spores rather than seed.
(Mosses, Fungi, Bacteria, Algae)
Dicotyledonae

Flowering plant with embryo that bears 2 cotyledons (seed leaves).
First leaves to appear, are in a pair of 2.
Veins in leaves are NOT parallel
Tend to have taproot with lateral branches
(Pea, Eucalyptus)
Monocotyledons

Flowering plant with embryo that bears 1 cotyledon (seed leaf).
First leaf appears as a single leaf.
Veins in leaves ARE parallel.
Tend to have a Fibrous root system
(Grasses, Irises, Orchids)
Taproot
A straight tapering root growing vertically down, forming the center where rootlets spring from.
Fibrous Root System
Thin, branched roots that arise from the base of the stem.
Hypogenous
Having the gynoecium situated above other floral parts.
Flower parts occur one above the other in the following order: sepals, petals, stamens, carpels.

Epiphytes
Also called “air plant” is any plant that grows upon another plant or object merely for support.
Annual Plants
Plants that complete their life cycle in one season. This is why they are called annuals. The grow, flower, set seed, and die in one year.
