Definition of Anatomy
study of morphological structure of the body
Anatomical position
body is standing erect
upper limb hanging by side
face looking forward
hands are facing forward
lower limb are parallel
Supine position
the person is lying, horizontally, on the back, face and body is looking up
Prone position
lying horizontal on the front with face and body looking down
Median plane
vertical plane passing through the midline of the body dividing it into two equal halves
Lithotomy position
usually, in childbirth and surgery, involves lying on you back with legs flexed 90 degrees at your hips and knees bent 70 to 90 degrees
Paramedian plane
vertical plane dividing the body into two unequal parts
Coronal plane
plane perpendicular to the median plane dividing the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back)
Transverse
horizontal plane dividing the body into two upper and lower parts
Median
structure lies in median plane
medial
structure lies near the median plane
Lateral
structure lies away from the median plane
Superior
structure close to upper end of the body
Inferior
structure close to the lower end of the body
anterior (ventral)
structure is towards the front of the body
posterior (dorsal)
structure lies towards the back of the body
Superficial
structure lies towards the surface of the body
deep
structure lies away from the surface of the body
Internal
structure lies towards cavity of a hollow organ
external
the structure lies towards the surface of a hollow organ
