Terminology Flashcards
core
The centre of the Earth, made mainly from iron and nickel.
mantle
The area beneath the Earth’s crust
Asthenosphere
The upper layer of the Earth’s mantle
Lithosphere
The more ridged, outer part of the Earth
Crust
The outer layer of the Earth’s structure
Continental crust
The thicker part of the Earth’s crust
Oceanic crust
The thinnest part of the Earth’s crust
Tectonic plates
A ridged section of the Earth’s crust.
Plate margins
The boundary between two or more tectonic plates
Constructive plate margins
Where tectonic plates are moving apart and magma rises between
Destructive plate margin
Where tectonic plates are moving together and the oceanic is subducted
Conservative plate margin
Where two plates slide past each other
Volcano
An opening in the Earth’s crust from which lava, ash and gas erupt
Earthquake
A sudden or violent movement within the Earth’s crust followed by a series of shocks
Convection currents
The circular movement of magma within the Earth’s mantle
