- Upon request by any woman
Under what conditions can a TOP occur between 13-20 weeks?
If the medical practitioner consults with the woman and:
- Continued pregnancy poses a risk to the woman’s mental or physical health
- Continued pregnancy poses a risk and the fetus would suffer from a mental or physical abnormality
- The rape resulted from rape or incest
- The continued pregnancy would significantly affect the woman’s socio-economic status

- Similar to natural miscarriage
- Used in early pregnancy

- Can last days to weeks
- Requires two visits
- Decreases in efficacy as the gestational age increases
- Woman may see blood

- High success rate
- Completed within minutes
What are the disadvantages of using surgical TOP?
- Invasive procedure
- Less private
- Facilities not always available
What is the medicine we use <9 weeks?
- Methotrexate and misoprostol
