What is involved in early medical termination?

A

Mifepristone 200mg PO to block progesterone

36-48 hours later misoprostol 800 mcg is administered to dilate the cervix and cause the lining of the uterus to shed
Takes about 4-6 hours

Women experience bleeding and pain

Women can take simple analgesia

There is a risk of heavy bleeding

What are the risks of abortion?

A

Excessive bleeding
Damage to cervix
Damage to uterus
Infection after the procedure - given antibiotics at the time

These occur in around 1/1000 abortions

Early medical/surgical procedures are more likely to fail

A

24 hour helpline
Discuss contraception
Anti D injection if Rhesus negative

Follow up appointment - to discuss feelings and check if abortion is complete

May bleed for several weeks

Normal fertility returns immediately!
