Menstrual Cycle Hormones Flashcards
When does LH peak?
18 hours prior to the release of the ovum
What hormones does the anterior pituitary gland produce?
Luteinising hormone
Follicle stimulating hormone
How high are levels of LH in childhood, during puberty, and in the menopause?
Childhood- low
Puberty - high
Menopause - highest
What does LH do?
Stimulates growth of the corpus luteum
Where is progesterone produced?
By the corpus luteum
By the placenta in pregnancy
What does progesterone do?
Creates secretory changes in the endometrium, and stimulates the production of thick cervical mucus
Relaxes smooth muscle and inhibits lactation in pregnancy. Levels drop before labour
What does FSH do?
Stimulates the growth of 6-12 follicles a month
Rise in FSH at onset of menstruation, then levels fall as oestrogen levels increase
Oestrogen and inhibin from the ovary inhibit FSH, as well as high levels of progesterone
Where is oestradiol secreted?
Secreted by the ovary
What does oestradiol do?
Stimulates proliferation of glandular and stromal elements of the epithelium
Increases progesterone receptors in endometrial cells
Thins cervical mucus
