Define linear
describes a painting style that is often crisp and neat
Define painterly
A style of painting that is usually unrealistic in the way that the brush strokes are visible and the figures are “fuzzy”
What does it mean to say the painting has planes?
A plane is a clear cut focal area within an image. A painting can be described planier(?) if there are distinct visual planes.
What does it mean to describe a painting that has recession?
Recession is the opposite of planes. The painting fades back seemlessly without clear cut points of dimension as the perspective.
What is a closed/tectonic form?
A closed form is a painting or object that stays within the frame and does not suggest any movement outward.
What is an open/a-tectonic form?
A painting or object that extends past the boundaries of the frame either through motion or physical parts of the objects.
Define multiplicity
To say that a painting has multiplicity means that there are multiple objects within the painting–more clearly, certain forms can be subtracted from the painting and the image would still appear complete.
Define unity
Unity is the opposite of multiplicity. While there may also be multiple forms within a painting with unity, not one can be taken out without changing the meaning or making the painting look incomplete.
What is absolute clarity?
it means that the story or meaning of the art is understandable to all audiences. The subject is absolutely clear.
What is relative clarity?
it means that the meaning of the artwork is only clear to certain people (ex. people of the time, religious people, etc.). The subject is only clear to the people that have a relationship with it.
