Metaphor as decoration/deception
when a metaphor is seen as decoration it is regarded as a deviant form of language. Thomas Hobbes considered metaphors to be one of the 4 abuses of speech because we use them to “deceive others”
Metaphor as argument
metaphors do not simply provide support for an argument; instead the structure of the metaphor itself argues. The metaphors we construct change and alter our perception of reality.
Time is money metaphor
: illustrates how the use or a particular metaphor can affect or thought and experience of reality. Because of common sayings in todays world such as “I’ve invested a lot of time in her”, “you need to budget your time”, and “this gadget will save you hours” because we expierence time in these ways we see it as something that can be spent, budgeted, wasted, and saved. We expect to be paid according to the amount of time we work etc.
Genre
A distinct group, class, type, or category of artifacts that share important characteristics that set it apart from other groups.
Situation
Specific conditions call forth particular kinds of responses that create a genre.
Generic participation
Determines which artifacts participate in which genres. This involves a deductive process in which you test an instance of rhetoric against the characteristics of a genre. Involves 3 steps (1)describing the perceived situational requirements, substantive and stylistic strategies, and organizing principle of a genre (2) describing the perceived situational requirements, substantive and stylistic strategies, and organizing principle of an artifact (3) comparing the characteristics of the artifact with those of the genre to discover if the artifact belongs in that genre. You then use these findings to confirm the characteristics of the genre or to suggest modifications to it.
Generic application
on the basis of the application of the generic characteristics to the specific model, you are able to determine if the artifact is a good or poor example of the genre
Generic description
Purpose is to define a genre and formulate theoretical constructs about its characteristics. Involves 4 steps 1.) observing similarities in rhetorical responses to particular situations (2.) Collecting artifacts that occur in similar situations (3.) analyzing the artifacts to discover if they share characteristics (4.) Formulating the organizing principle of the genre
