Term Final Flashcards
Consists of bones, ligaments, and cartilages that support and move body parts
Skeletal system
The skin and its accessory structures
Integumentary system
Muscles providing forces to move body parts, maintain posture, and are the main source of body heat
Muscular system
The brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sense organs; communicate through nerve impulses
Nervous system
Includes all the glands that secrete chemical messengers called hormones
Endocrine system
The heart, arteries, veins, capillaries, and blood; transports substances throughout the internal environment
Cardiovascular system
Composed of lymphatic vessels, lymph fluid, lymph nodes, thymus, and spleen; transports substances throughout the internal environment
Lymphatic system
Mouth, teeth, tongue, salivary glands, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine, and large intestine; absorbs nutrients and oxygen and excrete various wastes
Digestive system
Nasal cavity, pharynx, trachea, and lungs that move air in and out and exchange gases between blood and air
Respiratory system
Consists of the kidneys, uteters, urinary bladder, and urethra; purpose in maintaining water and electrolyte concentrations
Urinary system
Contains either the female uterus and vagina or the male testes and penis; produces a whole new organisms like itself
Reproductive system
A component of a homeostatic mechanism that establishes the range that is optimal for a particular measurement
Set point
Muscles or glands that effect changes in the body
Effectors
Specialized cells that provide information about the environment
Receptors
A state of balance in which the body’s internal environment remains in the normal range
Homeostasis
The fluid surrounding body cells
Internal environment
A mechanism activated by an imbalance that corrects the imbalance
Negative feedback
Pertaining to the head, neck, and trunk
Axial
Pertaining to upper or lower limbs
Appendicular
Tissues and organs of the thoracic cavity that form a septum between the lungs
Mediastinum
Organs in body cavities, especially in the abdomen
Viscera
Serous membranes that enclose the lungs and line the chest wall
Pleural membranes
The membrane that surrounds the heart
Pericardial membranes
Lines the cavity of the abdomen
Peritoneal membrane
Organelles housing enzymes that catalyze the reactions of aerobic respiration
Mitochondria
Cellular organelles enclosed by double-layered selective membranes that contain the genetic materials
Nucleus
Small structures in the cell nucleus that contains RNA and proteins
Nucleolus
A network of membranes found throughout the cell; synthesizes and packages proteins
Rough ER
And organelle that prepares and modifies cellular products for secretion
Golgi apparatus
