term 2 Properties of materials Flashcards
What is the definition of properties
A physical characteristic of an object for example its colour size or shape
What is the definition of malleable
A material able to be hammered or pressed into shape without breaking or cracking eg bluetack or gold
What is the definition of transparent
A material allowing light to pass through so that objects behind can be easily seen
What is the definition of flexible
A material that can bend easily without breaking
What is the definition of waterproof
A material that does not change when it comes in contact with water eg rain jacket, glass or plastic
What is the definition of permeable
A material allowing liquids or gases to pass through it eg clothes
What is the definition of conductor
A material that conducts heat or electricity
What is the definition of an insulator
A material which does not easily allow the passing of heat or sound eg rubber
What is the definition of Rigid
A material that is unable to be bent or forced out of shape Eg steel, stone or glass
What is the definition of biodegradable
rots down if left in the open
What is the definition of engineer
A person who designs, builds or maintains engines, machines or buildings
What is the definition of impermeable
A material that does NOT allow liquid to pass through eg: some plastic, glass and concrete
What is the definition of inflexible
A material that does not bend much before breaking eg: bricks, steel, glass
What is man-made
Materials that do not occur in nature
What is opaque
A material that cannot be seen through and does not let light pass through Eg wood, steel, brick
What is physical property
A characteristic of an object
What is recyclable
A material that can be reshaped into new objects
What is strong
A material that does not break easily when force is applied to it eg diamond, concrete, brick
What is transparent
A material that can be seen through
What is flexible
A material able to be bent or stretched without snapping or breaking eg wool, denim, rubber
What is absorbent
able to soak up water Eg paper towel or sponge
What is brittle
easily cracked or broken Eg glass or ceramics
What is dense
Compact, thick and hard to pierce eg marble or cement
What is elastic
Can recover to original shape after being stretched eg rubber band or lycra
What is hard?
Firmly formed, solid and scratch resistent. Eg Steel or diamond
What is magnetic
Attracted to magnets Eg paperclips
What is porous
A material that allows water to easily pass in and out Eg Paper, cloth, limestone
What is reflective
Casts a reflection eg mirror
What is soluble
Can be dissolved eg sugar or salt
What is translucent?
Allows light to partially pass through eg some blinds, frosted glass
What is Durable?
A material that lasts along time without being damaged eg: concrete, some plastic, steel, wool, stone and wood
