Term 2 - Cells Flashcards
What are living things are made of?
cells
name some structures found in a human cell
cytoplasm, nucleus, ribosome, mitochrondrion, cell membrane
how can you see cells?
under a electron microscope
name the function of a nucleus
controls the cell and has genetic information
what do mitochondria do
respiration happens here which releases energy
what happenes in the ribosome
protein made
what is the cell membrane for
controls what moves in and out of the cells
what is cytoplasm
a jelly-like substance
what special about a bateria cell
it has no nucleus
plant cells have 3 special extra parts, name them
chloroplasts - absorb light energy for photosynthesis,
vacuole - contains cell sap
cell wall -made of cellulose supports and strengthens the cell
name some example of specialised cells that are adapted for a special job
root hair cell- large surface area to absorb more water
red blood cell -tiny and flexible to get through narrow spaces
what is diffusion?
where particles more from an area of high density to low density e.g. sugar in tea,
how can you speed up diffusion?
increase the temperature, reduce the thickness of the cell wall, concentration difference between the two area
what is osmosis?
osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a solution with a high concentration of water molecules to a solution with a lower concentration of water molecules, through a cell’s semi permeable membrane.
where does diffusion occur in the body?
oxygen entering the blood stream.
